£1.8 million for real-world testing of 24/7 EEG SubQ

UNEEG medical and King’s College London have been awarded £1.8 million in the i4i Challenge Awards Call from the National Institute for Health & Care Research (NIHR) in the UK.

The grant will be used to conduct a multicentre, observational cohort study of our ultra long-term subcutaneous EEG monitoring solution. The overall aim of the study is to investigate the clinical value and the health economics of this solution.

Under the heading “Real World Testing and Cost-effectiveness Analysis of Subcutaneous EEG” (REAL-ASE), 33 people with drug resistant epilepsy will have the 24/7 EEG SubQ implanted for 6 months to detect their epileptic seizures.
The research study is a joint collaboration between King’s College London and UNEEG medical with Prof. Mark Richardson and Dr. Jonas Duun-Henriksen being co-lead investigators.

Four study sites will be included in the study:

  • King’s College London is the lead clinical site (Prof. Mark Richardson and Dr. Harutomo Hasegawa)
  • University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff (Dr. Khalid Hamandi)
  • Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust (Dr. Rajiv Mohanraj)
  • Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (Dr. Rhys Thomas)

Furthermore, the consortium will work with Prof. Rohit Shankar (University of Plymouth) to make 24/7 EEG SubQ accessible and feasible for adults with epilepsy and intellectual disability.

The group believes that this research will be key in improving seizure outcome measurement in epilepsy and that it will ultimately provide new standard of care for the patients and reduce the costs. The research group also aims to present an adoption plan to make this unique EEG monitoring solution more widely available to the right patients and clinicians across the UK.

The study will run for the next three years.
